Black Turmeric Root

Curcuma caesia

Black turmeric is a less known relative of the more common orange turmeric, but it is so strong that it is only used medicinally, both internally and externally.

Rhizomes have an interesting blue color and smell similar to camphor. The name is derived from the dark, almost black stripe along the leaf mid-vein.

Plant 3″ deep in the spring, will sprout in 4 weeks, harvest in the fall. In the tropics, harvest after the leaves have died back.

Common turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory properties due to the presence of curcumin in the root. Black turmeric is a rare variety from India with  a distinctive blue coloring and has a higher concentration of curcumin than orange turmeric!  We have provided it as a tincture extracted with 40% alcohol and the turmeric grown right here on our farm. This medicinal tincture is very potent and has a strong earthy or floral taste.
